Chapter Nine: The Séance

After I told the story about the kid we met on the way back from Barkin’s lab, it began a discussion about our origins and how the upcoming zombie hunt might lead us into more trouble. Peter and most of his group thought we were on a quest to show we were good enough to be accepted.

Most of our group agreed that we did feel a need to prove ourselves, but we also wanted to help our fellows—the human race. We were again inside our shadowy domain while the weather outside was warm and beautiful, with seagulls flying in and out of our cave and seals and cormorants sunning themselves on the beaches and cliffs. However, there were no sunbathers or swimmers around because of the roaming packs of zombies inhabiting the area. There were not enough police or military patrols to keep up the attacks on them. The plague of the undead kept pouring forth like they were being manufactured in China.

“Look,” I said, standing at the ocean entrance to our cave where the light outside came in from La Jolla Shores. “I have another theory about why we have visions of our relatives and families. The psychoanalyst Dr. Carl Jung says all humanity is connected, on the subconscious level, with what he terms the Collective Unconscious.”

Tim seemed enthusiastic to discuss this topic. “Indeed. He believed we could all connect on a societal, mythological level and on a personal, dream world level. Are you saying that what you zombies are experiencing is a connection to either or both of these unconscious levels and making them conscious?”

“I don’t know, Tim. I’m just saying that I know stuff, and I don’t really know where it came from. Like the information about Dr. Jung. I don’t remember reading any books—much less any by a psychoanalyst. What causes that? It must be some connection with something out there,” I added.

“Yes, maybe that’s what scared that kid so much,” said Susan. “He was seeing this vision, and he didn’t know what it was or where it came from.”

“Yeah, and it’s interesting that you remember only stuff that’s positive. It’s like you’re linked with goodness we left in our other world that we never acted upon. This connection you talk about. If the world had realized that and tried to find ways to connect, then we wouldn’t be where we are today,” said Peter.

“I don’t know,” said Tasha, moving over to stand beside me near the water’s edge. “I don’t remember anything, and I can talk, and I have feelings inside just like everybody else.”

“Hey, why don’t we try an experiment,” said Barbie. “My Chinese mother was a superstitious woman from an old country. She believed in séances. If we’re really necromancers, then we should all be able to connect with the spirit world.”

“Wow! Awesome, dude! I always wanted to do that trippy psychedelic stuff,” said Slim, paddling in to join us from his spot on a surfboard in the cave’s tide pool.
